A bookstore born from a purpose

When Janifer Wilson opened Sister’s Uptown Bookstore & Cultural Center in January 2000, her goal was deeply personal: to give children of color the opportunity to see themselves reflected in books. Growing up in segregated Georgia, she had longed for that same sense of recognition.

That founding purpose continues to shape this independent Black-owned bookstore. Located on the border of Harlem and Washington Heights, Sister’s Uptown brings Black literature and culture into everyday community life, creating a place where readers can discover stories that reflect their experiences and broaden their perspectives.

More than a place to buy books

Over more than two decades, the bookstore has grown into a cultural center and gathering space for neighbors, authors, scholars and artists. Book clubs, workshops and readings create opportunities to learn together and exchange ideas. By carrying the work of local writers and artists, the store also gives community creativity a place to be discovered.

Its programming celebrates the connections between literature, music and spoken word. The Uptown Poetry Circle welcomes poets, singers and musicians, while other gatherings bring people together around Black culture and issues that affect their lives. These activities make the bookstore a space for conversation as well as reading.

Sustaining a community legacy

Sister’s Uptown describes itself as a home for learning, creativity and community care. Its ongoing fundraising efforts invite supporters to help preserve that space for future generations and sustain the programs that bring people through its doors.

Supporting an independent bookstore can take several forms: discovering and purchasing books, exploring its cultural events, sharing its story or contributing through the support opportunities listed on its official website. Each offers a way to stay connected to the people and creative work the bookstore champions.
